Couples Intensives in Arlington, Texas
More time. More room to work on your relationship.
Some conversations need more than a traditional therapy session.
Relateborhood offers private Couples Intensives, sometimes referred to as Marathon Couples Therapy, for couples who want dedicated time to focus on their relationship without having to stop and wait until the following week.
Intensives can be scheduled for one or two days, depending on the couple, what brings you in, and the work you hope to accomplish.
Time Set Aside for Your Relationship
Weekly couples therapy works well for many couples. There are also times when having several hours together creates room for a different kind of work.
A Couples Intensive gives us time to stay with important conversations, understand the patterns between you, practice new ways of communicating, and continue working without automatically stopping because the session has ended.
The goal is not to rush therapy or promise that everything can be resolved in a day or two. It is to create focused time and space for your relationship.
Could a Couples Intensive Be a Good Fit for Us?
Couples choose an intensive for many different reasons. You might consider this format if you:
- Feel stuck in recurring patterns or disagreements
- Have difficulty feeling heard or understood by each other
- Want to strengthen communication and emotional connection
- Are trying to rebuild trust
- Are working through an affair, betrayal, or other relationship injury
- Are navigating substance use, addiction, recovery, or changes following treatment
- Want to better understand how past experiences or family patterns affect your relationship today
- Want faith or spirituality to have a place in your relationship work
- Are navigating parenting, blended-family concerns, adult children, boundaries, or other family transitions
- Have already participated in couples therapy and want more concentrated time
- Find weekly scheduling difficult
- Want to intentionally invest one or two days in your relationship
Before scheduling, we’ll talk about what brings you in and whether an intensive is a good fit for your relationship.
What Does a Couples Intensive Look Like?
There is no identical agenda for every couple.
A Couples Intensive is a full day of couples therapy with breaks throughout the day, including a one-hour lunch break. The pace and structure can shift depending on the couple and the work we are doing.
Your intensive takes place in a large, comfortable, private office at Relateborhood. We provide an assortment of drinks and snacks, along with the materials we use during our work together.
During breaks, our clinic also has comfortable indoor and outdoor areas where you can sit and rest, play ping pong or retro video games, or enjoy some fresh air on one of our balconies. Covered, shaded parking is available in our underground garage.
Some couples choose one intensive day. Others choose two days, giving us additional time to understand the relationship, work through important concerns, practice new skills, and build on the work from the previous day.
We’ll talk beforehand about the format that makes the most sense for you.
What Can We Work On?
Your Couples Intensive is shaped around your relationship, including the experiences outside the relationship that may be affecting the two of you.
Our work might include:
- Communication, conflict, and recurring relationship patterns
- Emotional connection, friendship, and intimacy
- Affairs, betrayal, trust, and relationship injuries
- Substance use, recovery, and the impact of addiction on the relationship
- Reconnecting as a couple during or after a transition from treatment or recovery
- Past experiences, trauma, and family-of-origin patterns that continue to show up in the relationship
- Parenting, blended families, adult children, boundaries, and family-system concerns
- Spirituality, faith, and Christian beliefs when couples want these to be part of the work
- Compromise, gridlock, and difficult life decisions
- Understanding each other’s inner worlds
- Shared meaning, values, and relationship goals
- Practical relationship skills you can continue using after the intensive
Couples do not need to fit neatly into one category. Relationship concerns often overlap, and the additional time of an intensive allows us to understand how different parts of your story may be connected rather than treating each concern in isolation.
Couples Intensives are grounded in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, with exercises and interventions selected around the needs of your relationship. Dr. Gutierrez’s broader clinical training and systemic perspective help inform and deepen the work.
GOTTMAN-BASED COUPLES WORK
Dr. Casey Gutierrez has completed Level 3 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and incorporates Gottman-based tools and interventions into his couples work.
This work can go well beyond learning how to communicate differently. Depending on the couple and their needs, our work may explore friendship and connection, conflict, trust, relationship injuries, shared meaning, family experiences, recovery, and the values or beliefs that shape the relationship.
The intensive format gives us more room to understand what happens between you, introduce Gottman tools and interventions that fit your relationship, practice them together, process what comes up, and continue building on the work while we are together.
One Day, Two Days, or Continuing Afterward
A Couples Intensive does not have to stand alone.
Some couples choose one focused day. Others choose two intensive days, allowing us to continue building on the work after stepping away and returning the following day.
Many couples also choose to continue with regularly scheduled couples therapy afterward. This can give us time to reinforce what was learned during the intensive, continue unfinished work, and support changes as they begin to become part of everyday life.
For some couples, an intensive is the beginning of couples therapy. For others, it becomes part of work that is already underway.
There is no single path that every couple has to follow.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
If you have other questions, please reach out. We’re happy to help you figure out whether a Couples Intensive might be a good fit.
The biggest difference is time.
Weekly couples therapy is a great fit for many couples and provides valuable time between sessions to practice, reflect, and return. For some couples, however, much of a session may be spent working through a recent argument, hurt, or misunderstanding. That work matters, but an intensive can provide enough continuity to address what is happening now and then keep going, moving into deeper conversations, skills, exercises, and experiences without waiting until the next appointment. For some couples, that built-in continuity may significantly accelerate the process because we can move from one meaningful piece of work into the next while staying connected to what we have already learned.
More generally, a Couples Intensive gives us a larger block of time to stay with important conversations, better understand what is happening between you, practice new skills together, and build on the work while we are still together.
For many couples, having that additional time and continuity can be especially valuable for deeper relationship work.
That depends on what brings you in, your goals, and how much focused time makes sense for the work.
Some couples want one dedicated day. Others prefer two days, giving us an opportunity to do substantial work, step away, and return for another day together.
We can decide together during the consultation.
No.
Some couples come because their relationship is hurting. Others want to strengthen something that is already good, address an issue before it grows, or simply prefer having concentrated time together.
An intensive may be appropriate for couples working through a significant relationship injury.
Affairs, betrayal, and loss of trust can involve complex conversations that benefit from additional time. An intensive can give us room to slow those conversations down, better understand what happened and how each partner has been affected, and begin the work of repair when appropriate.
Before scheduling, we'll talk about what has happened and whether an intensive is appropriate for where you are in the process.
It can be part of the conversation.
Substance use and recovery can affect trust, communication, roles, responsibilities, intimacy, and the entire family system. Couples may also find themselves trying to reconnect after treatment or adjusting to significant changes that come with recovery.
Dr. Gutierrez is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) in addition to his counseling credentials, allowing substance use and recovery concerns to be understood as part of the larger relationship picture when appropriate.
A Couples Intensive is not a substitute for detoxification, medical care, residential treatment, or another appropriate level of substance-use treatment.
Yes, if you want it to be.
For some couples, faith and spirituality are deeply connected to marriage, family, forgiveness, commitment, meaning, and the decisions they make together. These conversations can be incorporated into the work when they are important to you.
Couples do not need to be religious or share a particular faith to participate in a Couples Intensive.
Couples do not exist separately from the rest of their family.
Parenting differences, blended families, relationships with adult children, boundaries, caregiving, extended family, and difficulty helping an adult child move toward greater independence can all affect the couple relationship.
Because Dr. Gutierrez approaches relationships systemically, these concerns can be explored as part of the larger relationship and family picture.
No.
Relationships develop over years, and meaningful change does not have to happen according to a one-day or two-day deadline.
The intensive gives us time to understand more, work on what matters most, practice new ways of relating, and develop a clearer direction for what comes next.
Breaks are part of the day.
You'll have opportunities to step away and reset, along with a one-hour lunch break. You can leave for lunch, take a walk, sit somewhere quiet, or simply give yourselves some time away from therapy before returning.
Our clinic also has comfortable indoor and outdoor areas where you can sit and rest during breaks, play ping pong or retro video games, or enjoy some fresh air on one of our balconies. An assortment of drinks and snacks is available throughout the day, and covered, shaded parking is available in our underground garage.
Absolutely.
Many couples choose to continue with regularly scheduled couples therapy after an intensive. This gives us an opportunity to reinforce what you learned, continue unfinished work, address new concerns as they arise, and support changes over time.
You do not have to decide all of that before the intensive.
Yes, when appropriate.
Some couples find that one or two intensive days give them what they need before transitioning to regularly scheduled therapy. Others may choose another intensive later as the work develops.
No.
You are welcome to contact us specifically because you are interested in a Couples Intensive. We'll begin with a consultation to learn more about what you're looking for and determine whether the format is a good fit.
That's okay. Couples often travel to Relateborhood for a Couples Intensive from Fort Worth, Dallas, Southlake, Colleyville, Grapevine, Viridian, the Mid-Cities, and other communities throughout DFW.
Because Couples Intensives are concentrated into one or two days, some couples also choose to travel from other parts of Texas or elsewhere in the country specifically for their intensive.
Couples Intensives are held in person at Relateborhood in North Arlington, Texas, near I-30 and Fort Worth, making the clinic accessible from both the Fort Worth and Dallas sides of the Metroplex.
Dr. Casey Gutierrez is licensed to provide professional counseling in Texas and Colorado. When clinically appropriate, couples located in either state may also have the option to continue or supplement their work through telehealth before or after an in-person intensive.
Give Your Relationship the Time
You don’t have to know whether you need one day, two days, weekly therapy afterward, or exactly what the work should look like before reaching out.
We’ll start with a consultation, learn more about your relationship and what you’re hoping for, and decide together whether a Couples Intensive is the right next step.
